What is Airsoft?

Airsoft is a sport in which participants eliminate opponents by hitting each other with spherical non-metallic pellets launched via replica firearms called Airsoft guns.

Gameplay varies in style and composition but often range from short-term skirmishes, organized scenarios, C.Q.B., field, military simulations (MilSim), or historical reenactments and speedball. Combat situations on the battlefield may involve the use of military tactics to achieve objectives set in each game. Participants may attempt to emulate the tactical equipment and accessories used by modern military and police organizations.

Origins

Starting as far back as the 17th century, the Japanese government imposed very strict laws on gunsmithing and arms possession. Japanese weapons law starts of by stating "No-one shall possess a fire-arm or fire-arms or a sword or swords".

Without a license, a Japanese citizen may not even hold a gun in his or her hands. Sportsmen are allowed the use of rifles or shotguns, but only for purposes of hunting or skeet shooting. And they are only allowed to do so following a very strict licensing procedure.

To allow the Japanese people to enjoy gun sports, Airsoft was invented in the 1980s. Using weapons that look like their real steel analogues but fire round plastic pellets 6mm in diameter. From Japan, this new type of gun conquered the world in the years after.

Technology

All types of airsoft guns have one thing in common: they look like their real firearm equivalents. But the internal working of the guns can be described as one of 3 types:

AEG

AEG or automatic electric guns work on the principle of an electric motor that propels the ammunition (plastic BBs) out of the barrel. They need a battery to power the electric motor and (virtually) no recoil is generated. This technology is primarily used in replicas of SMGs (submachine guns) and machine guns. It can also be found to a lesser extent in pistol replicas.

GBB

GBB or gas blowback guns function mostly like (semi-)automatic guns. They use the power generated by expanding gas to propel the BB out of the barrel and to cycle a mechanism to load another BB into the chamber. This technology is used primarily in replicas of semi-automatic pistols and to a lesser extent in (semi-)automatic rifles. Magazines for these replicas contain both the BBs and the gas used to fire the weapon. Gas comes in the form of CO² cannisters that can be put into a magazine or the lighter system that allows you to fill the gas container with green gas or propane from a larger tank.

Spring

Spring powered replicas need you to manually perform a cocking action after each shot to load the next BB and prepare the gun to fire again. This is mostly used in single shot replicas, like sniper rifles, and at the cheap end of the spectrum in pistols.

Disciplines

Skirm

Some people would describe skirming as reminiscent to paintball. You run around a certain location with a team and try to shoot people on the other team to take them out of the game until one side or the other wins. This is somewhat correct, although the airsoft variant is much more tactical and resembles real military operations more closely.

AIPSC

The airsoft variant of the real steel pratical shooting sport. All the rules and regulations that apply to practical shooting with real steel firearms applies to the airsoft variant as well. Shooters go through a shooting course, attempting to hit cardboard and steel targets. Points are rewarded/deducted for targets hit/missed and divided by the total time needed to finish the course. This is also known as Action air.

  1. Aisroft is a popular sport and is quite famous nowadays. People spend lots of money on Airsoft guns and choosing the right accessories and attire for airsoft. But what about those who can’t afford those expensive guns?
